We look forward to sharing more about our environmental impact and targets as we develop our activities and deploy our ESG strategy over the coming years. Learn more about where we are headed in terms of providing clean energy to the mining sector below.
Our extensive experience in the DRC has taught us several lessons. Early on, we recognized the damaging social repercussions of the country’s mining sector and put ethics, health & safety, and community development at the core of what we do. The environmental sustainability of our business has been an increasingly important consideration, and we are proud to operate in accordance with best practices to minimize our environmental impact. As part of its ESG strategy, African Energy Metals is embarking on an aggressive, high-impact renewable energy plan to combat climate change and energy poverty, bringing value to the region and its communities.
There are 85 million people in the DRC, the majority without access to electricity. Despite government and private electrification efforts, initiatives have remained mostly unsuccessful. In recent years, the government and President Felix Tshisekedi have expressed a strong desire to implement renewables throughout the country to address the high demand for power and several investments into renewables projects have since been announced. Nevertheless, the mining sector has very particular energy requirements which have remained unmet by existing solutions, with most companies still relying on fossil fuels and diesel gen-sets to power their operations.
